Is Botox safe? Common myths and facts

A simple guide by Dr Adriana M. Ozery, Doctor Picasso, Limassol

Botox is one of the most researched and widely used treatments in medicine and aesthetics. Still, there are many myths about it. Here are the facts.

Myth: “Botox is a poison”

Botox is a purified protein that has been used in medicine for decades, for conditions such as eye muscle problems, migraines and excessive sweating. Aesthetic treatments use very small, precise doses, given by a medical doctor.

Myth: “I will look frozen”

A frozen look comes from too much product or the wrong placement. Our approach is natural: softening lines while you can still smile, frown and express yourself.

Myth: “When you stop, wrinkles get worse”

No. When Botox wears off, the muscles gradually return to how they were before. Your lines do not become worse than they would have been without treatment.

Myth: “Botox is only for women” or “only for older people”

More and more men have Botox, and many people in their late twenties and thirties use it to soften lines early. The right timing depends on your face, not your age.

What makes Botox safe

Safety depends on who treats you and what product is used. At Doctor Picasso, every treatment starts with a medical consultation and a review of your health. Botox is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with certain neuromuscular conditions. Side effects are usually mild and temporary, such as small bruises or a slight headache, and rarely a temporary drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow. All possible risks are explained before treatment, and you sign a consent form.
